LA Studios chose RSPE to supply Digidesign's D-Command and Pro Tools HD... "When I walk in the front lobby at RSPE I feel like I'm not in a sales place but a place where I can learn. RSPE has been really good about demos and seminars and they are done very professionally."

The LA Studios Inc. is comprised of three facilities: LA Studios, Margarita Mix Hollywood, and Margarita Mix Santa Monica. They have been recognized as leaders in their field for over 25 years throughout the advertising and entertainment community, locally, nationally and internationally. All three locations combined have a total of 17 Pro Tools systems. Keith Scheyving, Chief Technical Engineer for LA Studios, has been working with Dave Szpak and RSPE for approximately 10 years. As Keith says, "Dave tells me the smart way of buying what we need." LA Studios just finished Shrek 3, they're starting Shrek 4. They're also working on several Disney projects. Margarita Mix Hollywood is currently doing a lot of DVD commentary work, while the Santa Monica location is doing more advertisements and some music videos. They've become the studio of choice for DVD commentary bonus materials.
You've been working with Dave Szpak and RSPE for many years, what do you like most about working with them?
"Well, Dave and most of the crew at RSPE are users along with sales people, so they're not the normal 'white shoe try to sell me something' [type of sales person]. If I have a problem, Dave makes it his problem and if he doesn't have an answer immediately he'll dig out an answer for me and make me look better. So, as a lot of our clients like us to make them look better, I like Dave to make me look better. I've never had any problem with anybody at RSPE, making me look less than professional. So it's an easy choice."
It's been really nice getting to know Dave and becoming part of the family. When I walk in the front lobby at RSPE I feel like I'm not in a sales place but a place where I can learn. RSPE has been really good about demos and seminars and they are done very professionally. I know Russ has spent a lot of money re-doing his lobby several times to make us more comfortable in the seminars and that's all been very appreciated. It's not like I have to go to some hotel somewhere and pay for parking… He's made it so it's real simple, and after a day at work to go over there and learn more is kind of nice." There are many choices for consoles in today's market. Why did you choose D-Commands and Protools for your facility and how has it improved your workflow?
"For a long time we'd been trying to find a solution for a hardware controller for pro tools. We've been Digi people since the very very beginning and we've looked at other people's solutions and they've always been lacking in many ways. We did buy into Digi's early solutions which lacked, desperately, monitoring for our post world. The new D-Commands and ICON products have finally addressed our monitoring issues and made it much easier for us to do our job. We use to have a separate console on the side just to take care of the monitoring while we were recording, we no longer need to do that… It's no longer necessary with the new D-Command. So we're actually considering putting them in more locations. It makes our engineer's lives a lot easier."

LA Studios are well known voice over specialists where top voice talent can be seen walking the halls at any time. Although microphones used vary from project to project, two popular choices among producers and in house engineers are the Neumann U87 and the Sennheiser MKH-416.
As for as Protools plug ins, LA Studios uses Source Elements Source Connect to record talent from all parts of the world, remotely. Waves bundles are the preferred choice at Margarita Mix Hollywood. |
