"What mic do you like to use for recording instruments?" "I am madly in love with... the Beyer 160 Ribbon Mic." Tony explains that it’s an incredible electric guitar mic. He likes ribbon mics because they grabs the top end and makes it very pleasing while still defined. "Beyer has a very specific sound, it has size and openness and it’s a very affordable mic.” On the latest low-cost microphones from companies like SE Electronics and Avant,Tony has this to say.... “There is definitely something happening with the new generation of Chinese microphones... there are a number of them that are a great value for the dollar... They make good sound very affordable to a young producer or engineer.” "It sounds like you’ve passed on the creative musical talent to your children, tell us about that." “I have two daughters and a son, all of them play music, but my middle child is a recording artist on Geffen Records and has a group called ‘The Like’, she writes and sings the material and plays guitar. She finished touring her first album last December at the Wembley Arena in London, and she recently sang on the new Bright Eyes album. My son has a band, and my oldest daughter is a painter and a musician.” Tell us about the Malibu Performing Arts Center. “The Malibu Performing Arts Center is like no place I have ever seen. It’s a complex located in Malibu across the street from the Malibu Colony. It has this unusual distinction of this magnificent edifice but a mom and pop place at the same time. It’s this impressively equipped building with a 500 seat theater, a state of the art recording studio, a mastering studio, dance studios with sprung floors, an amphitheater, a fencing studio, editing rooms, a dining room, a graphic arts company, every room in the building is wired for audio video and satellite. It’s equipped with the most recent Protools rig plus the Apogee converters. There’s also a beautiful API Legacy 2, which has been housed at Cello and Cherokee. It has attracted artists as diverse as Tom Petty, Chaka Khan, Cat Power, Joanna Newsom, etc.”
