George S Clinton

George S. Clinton chose RSPE and ADAM Audio speakers.

“I was blown away just because it was a place that catered to professionals with high end gear, that that existed in this world was an amazing revelation to me!"

George’s zest, talent and skill has won him eight BMI awards, one of them being the career achievement award, which he proudly won this year. “I felt great about that because the recipients have been John Williams and Danny Elfman, and I thought, wow, this is a real achievement to get that award. Especially from that organization, because they’re such champions of composers, they’re like family, so it meant a whole lot.”

George was nominated for an Emmy this year for his score in the HBO hit movie, Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee. “That was fun to do because I got to do a lot of dramatic music, I’m known for comedies and so that’s what I get hired for the most, but I love doing dramas and this was a real opportunity.”

Some of his other scoring accomplishments include the hit comedy Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and its blockbuster sequels, the hit martial arts fantasy and its sequel. Other noteworthy projects include John Waters’ A Dirty Shame, Disney’s holiday hits The Santa Clause 2 and 3, Tim Allen’s poignant Joe Somebody, Kevin Costner’s wild 3000 Miles to Graceland, The Astronaut’s Wife, starring Charlize Theron and Johnny Depp, and the sexy thriller Wild Things. Most recent projects include Big Momma’s House 2, The Cleaner, and Deck the Halls.

George went to school outside Nashville TN and majored in music and drama. While he was in college, he was writing country songs. Not wanting to spend the rest of his life doing country music, after graduation George decided to take his passion for music to Los Angeles. He began writing songs for Warner Brothers Music. Then he had a band called the George Clinton Band and that opened up the door for the producer of Cheech and Chong to ask to score music for Still Smokin’, his first movie. “That was 25 years ago, and that’s what I’ve been doing ever since,” George says.

What led you to choosing the ADAM speakers?

“What I need is speakers that make my music sound good. I don’t need clinically… accurate to the point of being painful, you know what I mean? Sometimes you’ll see a beautiful face, and it’s a beautiful face and some lenses will make it look the way it is which is beautiful, and some lenses will amplify the problems with that face. And the same thing is true about music, some speakers are able to give it its fullness and make it sound great and I don’t mean in a fake way, but some are so critical in the way that they reproduce sound that are clinical…”

“I’ve talked to Chuck Choi and Ernie Lee about the people they’ve worked with, and I think that Danny Elfman had just gotten some…[Adam speakers]. And in talking to Dave about the size of my room, I realized that what I needed was a real mid-field monitor, I didn’t want some near-field monitor to try to do the work in this room, because this is a big enough room to warrant big speakers, so I got the S4As, and then I got the Sub12 woofer to go with them, and man it’s great! I told Dave, “When I listen to these speakers, its as close to sex with a supermodel as I’ll ever get!”

“Dave Szpak is great, he’s there to serve, and what I love about it is that he is totally focused on the sound of the speakers. His comments about what he’s hearing… about the way the speakers sound… I think that’s great. A lot of times you’ll have sales people who are kind of too salesman-like, he is more of a pro guy, he comes from an engineering kind of place, rather than just a sales kind of place, and that’s so reassuring because my experience with buying equipment had either been online or going into [a large music chain-store] where some Bon Jovi wannabe is screeching in the corner on the guitar and the sales people there are just clueless, especially when it comes to high level pro gear. So when I first walked into RSPE, it was unbelievable! A place dedicated to professional gear, it blew my mind totally. It’s the first time I ever experienced that, so I’m a big fan, and I’m a huge fan of these Adam speakers.”

You just started doing business with Dave and RSPE.  What do you like about the environment there versus other dealers?

“I was blown away just because it was a place that catered to professionals with high end gear, that that existed in this world was an amazing revelation to me, because frankly I had dealt with another couple of companies in town that supposedly did that but I always felt like they didn’t know who I was, they didn’t care who I was, they wanted to get me in and out as quickly as possible, and I left there hoping that I would get delivered what I had paid for at the time they said they’d deliver it and that the order would be what I ordered, because I’ve had stuff show up that’s like “Excuse me, I’m sorry, this is not right” so the great thing about RSPE and the atmosphere there, first of all it’s a beautiful building it’s just great… the layout itself is very spacious, very professional looking and the people are extremely friendly and Dave knew what I had done and seemed interested in what I was doing. If you’re going to be a salesperson, especially with people in entertainment, you’ve gotta do your homework, you’ve gotta know what they’ve done and who they are, and if you don’t then you’re going to lose a sale.”
